Japanese Mixed Media Techniques

7-9 PM    6 weeks

In this class, we will learn the fundamentals of mixed-media collage, using bird imagery as our subject matter. The class will provide instruction using a variety of materials and techniques, with particular emphasis on learning how to compose images using positive/negative space. Painting, printing, stretching paper, making pigment binder and paste will be featured. All supplies provided.

Open Studio Figure Drawing


First Tuesdays, September - December; March- June

2018 season begins March 6th

6-8:30 PM

$12 (pay during session)

​Working with professional live artist models, these monitored sessions are an exciting opportunity for the 18+ artist who wishes to affordably work figuratively, independent of instruction. Primarily geared for the intermediate-advanced adult artist.  

Each session includes an initial series of croquis followed by one or two long poses. Please provide your own supplies (some easels available). All mediums welcome!

Saturday Junior/ Teen

Introduction to Fine Art
Ages 9 and up (class size limited), 10 weeks


February 17 - April 21 CLASS FILLED; registration closed

$130 ($120 if registered before February 3rd)

This class supplies its junior students with an initial foundation in the traditional fine arts via each student’s imaginary, representative or abstracted interpretation. Highlighting one noted artist/art movement per class, instructor Eileen McDonnell (see her biography in ABOUT US) actively provides students a working knowledge of classic art mediums through painting, drawing and printmaking demonstrations. Students are strongly encouraged to experiment with each new concept before ultimately choosing their favored method of individual expression.

Supplies provided. Come to class in old paint clothes!

 Clothed Figure Drawing / Open Studio 


2018 season begins March 20th

Third Tuesdays, September-December; March-June 

$12 (pay during each session)

       This program was designed as an opportunity for artists of all ages to learn how to approach drawing the clothed human-figure-as-subject, perhaps for the first time. Our models will present themselves in clothes/costume, to be announced prior to each session. Especially ideal for students preparing their portfolios.

      Basic tenets of gesture and composition will be demonstrated to beginners requesting instruction (write to A complement to CAL's regular open studio adult figure drawing sessions, each open studio class will incorporate both croquis and long poses. Instructor/monitor: Eileen McDonnell

Thursday AM Adult 

Basic Drawing

9:30-11:30AM  10 weeks

February 15 - April 19

$175 ($165 if registered before February 1st)

Learn the basic skills of drawing, using graphite pencils and charcoal. As students progress, optional personal segues into basic painting skills (watercolor, gouache, acrylic) will be introduced. We will be working from a variety of subjects.  Beginners will learn new skills, or students can fine-tune the ones they already have. Instructor: Ava Blitz

Drawing and Painting: Independent Projects

9:30AM-11:30AM   10 weeks

February 13 - April 17

$175 ($165 if registered before January 30th)

These classes are for adults 18 and older.  Instructor is Ava Blitz (see her biography in ABOUT US).  Students are able to work on individual projects in the medium of their choice (please provide your own supplies). This class is for beginners to advanced.  Students will receive personal instruction.
